From theory to practice: SWITCH pilot projects

We're field-testing the effectiveness of the OptiModal AI platform to transform cross-border transport between Italy and Switzerland.

Pilot Projects

The SWITCH project addresses crucial issues for the Italian-Swiss cooperation area. The core of the problem lies in the excessive traffic load on cross-border roads and border crossings, which creates congestion and significant environmental impacts on fragile Alpine natural areas.

Through a multidisciplinary approach, SWITCH aims to foster a modal shift from road to rail, integrating logistics expertise, policy governance, and advanced Artificial Intelligence technologies.

GOALS

Technical validation

Confirm the effectiveness of the OptiModal AI platform in suggesting modal shifts.

Measuring impact

Empirically evaluate the delivery times, costs, and reduction of externalities (pollution, traffic) in the transition to intermodal transport.

Analysis of enabling factors

Identify precisely what facilitates or hinders the transition from road to rail.

The strategic axes: Simplon and Gotthard
The pilot activities will focus along the main railway axes connecting the cooperation area:
Sempione axis

Testing of freight flows through border crossings in the Northwest.

Gottardo axis

Experimentation along the Rhine-Alpine corridor to optimize transit to Central Switzerland.

How the Pilot Project works

Institutional, academic, and industrial entities collaborating for a common goal.

1. Selection of supply chains

Identification of the product categories most suitable for modal switching (e.g. chemicals, agri-food, manufacturing) based on flow analysis

2. Involvement of companies

Involvement in experimentation through the use of the tool.

3. Simulation and Testing

Provides support in collecting railway infrastructure data and develops incentive and governance models.

Reporting

Contributes to the drafting of guidelines to facilitate modal switching and the dissemination of results to stakeholders.
